Structural Surveys with Reports are required by the HSE, EA, insurance companies and by the owners, usually as a result of:
• Defects in design and construction
• Deterioration with time or in service
• Accidental damage or collapse
• For purchase, insurance, or legal purposes
• Change in use
• Future safety or serviceability
• To ensure compliance with current standards and legislation
Our engineers tailor surveys to meet client specific requirements and to minimise costs and disruption. Surveys are carried out broadly in line with The Institution of Structural Engineers “Appraisal of existing structures’’ (3rd Edition).
Initially most surveys are non-intrusive visual surveys, utilising existing access where possible. Typical reports produced describe the scope of the survey, include location plans, defect sheets and recommendations. The defect sheets locate, detail and categorise the problem along with a photograph and identify any recommended actions.
Recommendations can include remedial work and preventative action or requirements for more detailed inspection involving improved access, de-scaling, ultrasonic thickness testing, hammer testing etc. Thickness testing along with calculations can be completed to determine the residual steelwork capacity based on reduced section thickness and the suitability of existing structures for current or proposed use
On several occasions we have undertaken site wide inspection of pipe bridges, bunds and roads and helped our clients develop registered structure systems.
