Addison are proud to once again sponsor Grassroots sport. Joe, an Industrial Chemist at Acumen Waste and son of our Sales Director, Kevin, is one of the able bodied squad members in the Sheffield Eagles Wheelchair Rugby League team.

The sport itself is growing massively, partly off the back of England winning the World Cup in 2022 and partly due to the inclusivity it brings. The Eagles have two teams, both part of the Charity Foundation attached to the professional Rugby League club, with counterparts in the Women’s, Learning Disabled and soon to be Physically Disabled running game.

There simply aren’t enough physically disabled players to make up all of the teams across the UK and so it’s supplemented by able bodied players as well. It’s also fully gender neutral, with wholly mixed teams.

Age is also no barrier. Sheffield actually has a mother/daughter/son partnership in the squad, where Will Brooks, one of the less able players, is only 13 years old. His mum used to play the running game (Kevin, an ex-professional Rugby League referee, actually officiated her team over 20 years ago!) so is delighted to be back involved in her later years. It’s having that level of impact.

The Eagles team has already appeared on the BBC in the Challenge Trophy Final last year. The first team will be playing in the national Championship this year so the Addison name could reach quite a way!
